A writer is on a journey to discover the true story of The Original Pearline Portious, a young woman who ended up working in a leper colony when she tried and failed to sell her purple doily in the local market. Pearline has a fondness for colours, BRIGHT colours, and it is only amongst the leper colony that she finds takers for her unusual knitting style. Her story is intercut with the story of the 'warner woman', who has a gift for prophecy and is in fact, the daughter of Pearline. She is telling the same story but from her ownpoint of view and she feels the writer is twisting the facts! The original Pearline Portious died in childbirth but her daughter lived on with the lepers until one day she felt a calling, which led her to join a revivalist church that made use of her gift of prophecy (the gift of 'warning').
