Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt: ...under the pressure of the water, thus causing it to rush into the feeder and canal. As stated in The Union on Monday the break was in front of what is known as the Welsh farm, two hundred yards south of the pest house, the bank giving way for a distance of about seventy feet. This will have to be filled in with cribbing and earth at the present time, and further repairs may be made later. When the break has been repaired and tested the dam in the feeder will probably be taken out. Then the Lehigh Valley railroad will get its trains through. It will be remembered that the Lehigh Valley laid its tracks along the feeder bank one Sunday afternoon, six or seven years ago, and that injunction proceedings were talked of, but an amicable agreement was finally reached. Engineer Barnard Prevented Deluge. The importance of the temporary dam built under Engineer Barnard's direction may be understood when it is stated that Commissioner of l'ublic Works McClintock holds that it was the only thing that prevented an overflow that would have entailed great property damage and possible loss of life. "The feeder is several feet higher than the canal," said Commissioner McClintock in discussing the matter this morning, "and had that dam not been erected there would have been a rush of water down the feeder and into the streets that nothing could have resisted once it started. What the loss would have been in such an event is hard to estimate, but it would have attained figures that would total hundreds of thousands of dollars. That dam certainly saved a most serious flood and Engineer Barnard is entitled to a great deal of credit for the promptness with which he sized up the situation and took measures to prevent further trouble."
