Not illustrated. 1897 Excerpt: ..."Oh," cried the abbe, rising to throw himself down at Olympe's knees, "it is impossible for me to see you playing such a comedy any longer; and--" He had not finished his sentence, he had not executed his contemplated movement, he had not touched Olympe with the end of his finger, when the hairdresser, flushed, dishevelled, and gasping for breath, rushed into the room, and almost fell between the near-sighted abbe and her mistress. Olympe's towering wrath, the victorious yet suppliant attitude of the abbe, told the hairdresser that she had arrived in the nick of time, and that it would have been all up with the secret a moment later. Olympe, seeing her frightened appearance, could not help laughing. "You called me, Madame?" cried the woman. "No; but I was just about to call you," Olympe replied, with a withering glance in the direction of Monsieur d'Hoirac. The abbe made an attempt to justify himself. "Monsieur," said Olympe, "you know, I think, on what conditions I receive you at my house." "What then?" "What then! Why, you have broken them, that's all." "Ah, my dear!" cried the abbe, dismayed at the tone in which she addressed him. "Again!" said she. "But it's before nobody but her!" cried the abbe', in despair,--" before your confidante! so it's exactly the same as if we were alone." "Are you mad?" exclaimed the hairdresser, seizing him by the arm and twirling him around. "Show the abbe' out," said Olympe, "and request him not to drink any more maraschino on the days he proposes to come here."
