<description><![CDATA[This thesis presents outstanding new research on many important subjects, including the wet adhesion of marine mussel adhesive proteins, the reversible dry adhesion of geckos and the biolubrication mechanism of human joints. In this context, the main result elucidates the adhesive mechanisms of protein-based adhesives inspired by marine mussels. Developing moisture-resistant adhesives is in high demand in the medical field for use in tissue and dental adhesives. Using a Surface Forces Apparatus and other physico-chemical characterization techniques, Dr. Yu was the first person worldwide to conduct a detailed study on the molecular binding mechanisms of a DOPA-containing marine mussel adhesive protein on various surfaces, laying the foundation for developing mussel inspired adhesives and biomimetic coatings for wide-ranging biomedical applications, such as cell encapsulants, bone/dental glues, paints for coronary arteries, fetal membrane sealants and in organ transplants.<p>Building on the work above, this pioneering work also explores the importance of hydrophobic interactions, the lubrication of human joints and osteoarthritis and the bio-adhesion exhibited by the foot pads of geckos.]]></description>
